Off the Shelf - A Call for a New Alphabet

Hello!

This week's book to be featured is 'A Call for a New Alphabet' by Jef Czekaj. I was originally expected a run of the mill alphabet book in which the letter 'X' plays some form of commentary but I was so thankfully surprised.

I bought the book at Booktopia's Moving Sale, for $1.95, a total steal! You can view the book trailer below...

The story focuses on a class vote to change the order of the alphabet after X expressed his disdain for his placement. Along the way we learn about grammatical rules and spelling patterns while listening to how other letters feel about their place in the alphabet. The resolution of the story explains why our alphabet looks the way it does.

The book begins as a traditional picture book however transforms to take the appearance of a comic book, or graphic novel. The 'blended narrative' style of the book asks the reader to use their multi-literacy skills to interpret the dialogue on which the story rests.

I absolutely loved the book and the way it incorporated the standard rules and conventions of language in a funny and relative way for children. I'm so disappointing that this will just fly over the kindergartner's heads but this is definitely one to share with your class after they have grasped the concept of alphabetical order, grammar and spelling rules and patterns.

Outside a read aloud, the book continues to have merit with creating your own alphabet character, reordering the alphabet yourself and descriptions of what you would like to be among some of them.  This is one book to hold onto for when I start my primary school placements and one to add to your growing collection!

Off the Shelf - I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen

Hi all!

Due to one of my more recent assignments, I have had to peruse the shelves for good quality children's literature. After reading the good, the bad, and the never-to-be-shared, I decided that it was only fair to share my discoveries with you. So this new section was born: Off The Shelf!

The book I ended up choosing for the said assignment was 'I Want My Hat Back', by Jon Klassen. This book was first brought to my attention during a lecture in relation to picture book series', as it is the predecessor to the Caldecott winner by the same author, 'This Is Not My Hat'.

Above is the book trailer and summarises the book perfectly; a bear has lost his precious hat and resorts to asking his friends if they have seen it. Little does he know that one of his friends may have taken it to begin with!

The book has the overarching message of lying and theft but uses timing, suspense and inference to present its key messages. The text is structured like a conversation but who is speaking is differentiated using colours rather than quotation marks.

The illustrations are beautiful to look at and add to the meaning of the text; the last 4-5 pages of the text is wordless so it is through the images that we see how the bear's story ends.

I have used this book with kindergarten aged children but it can be utilized with older children as well. Be sure to ask the children for their end responses; if you had some like mine, they will really shock you!

No spoilers but the ending is great! I would definitely be hanging on to this book for years to come.

Check your local or school library to see if they have a copy or grab one off Book Depository or Amazon.

My Educational App Collection

Good morning all,

I have been posting a few app reviews lately and thought it was about time I showed you my app collection. It's taking a while to come up with this many educational apps and I have had some great sources; the Ipadopedia, a children's literature unit I took in first semester and a music education unit I just completed.
But lately I have found a new source, the Education section of the iTunes store. This section of the store caters for varying levels of education, from early childhood straight up to self education for adults. It is meticulously organised, much like my iPad, and has great sections:
  • Reading
  • Maths
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Music
  • Writing
  • Life Science
  • Geography
  • Astronomy and Earth Science

And so we begin the journey through my iPad! I have provided a picture of each folder and the apps they contain and what section I find them useful to store under.

In Review - The Teacher's IpadoPedia

Hey readers,

Recently I decided to peruse the (free) shelves on the iTunes bookstore and was astounded by the number of free books available in the education section. I came across textbooks, guides and many other wonderful things and promptly downloaded all that I could see. The first book I decided to read was 'The Teacher's IpadoPedia, An A-Z of using iPads in the classroom' by Philip Johnston.

Philip Johnston

After my first placement and some of the material we have been covering in class, I have come to realise what an impact technology can have in the classroom, both good and bad, and how this comes into play when I eventually am in the classroom. For these reasons, I decided to go with this book first and was pleasantly surprised with what I had found.

This book blew my mind! Not only was it incredibly well written and set out, Johnston commented on a large range of topics including:
  • attendance
  • managing homework
  • archiving
  • coaching
  • photocopying
  • quizzing
  • creative writing
  • taking notes
The book is divided into categories, with app listed which can either perform a task or help aid the process of the mentioned categories. Not only is there a wide range of apps, free and paid, to cover the categories but the book is cross references when apps have multiple functions.

The actual layout of the book is clean with small chunks of information and plenty of pictures to accompany. The great thing about this being an eBook is that often the text is interactive! Beside the text, you will often find videos which demonstrate an app and how it works and text is often hyper-linked to show you exactly what app you should download and where to find them.

I have already downloaded some of the apps and can see their potential for use of them in the classroom. Other I have been able to integrate into my university life! Overall I enjoyed reading this book, it was not text heavy, it flowed well, you could jump chapters without feeling lost and the interactive nature made finding what Johnston what talking about incredibly easy.

Philip Johnston has also step up a great website for the book which includes sample pages, links to download the book as well as a contact page if you would like to speak with the author. The website can be found here.

As Johnston said in the foreword, reading this book does not mean you have to apply everything that you read about but rather take what you like and make it work for your classroom. There are some great apps listed and the great thing is the discovery, while Johnston may list the app for one use, you could find a totally new use, either for the classroom or for your personal life!

For those of you who are still unsure, you have nothing to lose as this book is 100% free to download from the iBookstore!

Stay tuned as I discover more education eBooks from the iTunes bookstore!

In Review - PicStitch

Hello again,

As you may have already noticed, I like to use photo collages in my blog posts and they would not be possible without the wonderful app of PicStitch!

I'm a big user of Instagram, stalking and and posting alike, so when I saw a few posts with the hashtag #picstitch, I couldn't help but check it out. This led my down the rabbit hole.

My favourite feature of PicStitch is its simplicity. The interface is dark, with very little advertising space, and uses very little text. There are something like 280 collage templates to choose from but this wasn't enough and I ended up paying $0.99 to unlock all templates.  You can chose your photos from various sources, including your photo album, camera, Facebook, Dropbox and other social media sources.

When it comes to putting the collage together, even simpler! Just choose the the photos your using and then what edits you would like to make. There are various options for editing including enhance, effects, frames, stickers, focus, orientation, crop, sharpness, splash, draw, ext, red eye, whiten, blemish and meme.

When your done editing, you have the option to change your layout, the aspect ratio of the frame or to re-size your photos. Adjust the product in the frame and then move onto the next photo. Repeat then fiddle until you're happy!

The last step is to save your photo. Again, many options to choose from. I usually go for the option to save to my photo album but here is where you pay for the free app, usually you are exposed to 30 seconds of a movie trailer or an app advertisement. Not much to bear but enough for me to feel impatient!

PicStitch is available from the iTunes App Store, free to download but any add ons are paid. I highly recommend this app if you feel the need for a collage!

Happy blogging, and let me know how PicStitch works for you!

My Planner

Hello again,

So I'm sure everyone is part of a rewards club, maybe it's Flybuys, Myer One, Everyday Rewards, coffee shop or some company that I am not aware of, but most likely, everyone as a stack of cards in their wallet that entitles them to discounts or builds up their points.

Well, I shop at Woolworths so I have an Everyday Rewards card which is linked to my Frequent Flyers Account. I realised if we are spending money every week, the points shouldn't go to waste.

Now a couple of weeks ago, I bought the hot roller set I was saving my points for (massive sale at Myer) so I shopped around for what I could spend them on instead.

And what do I see when I open the browser? A lovely spread of Kikki K stationery. Usually, I cannot afford their stationery; while it is so pretty, of excellent quality and extremely functional, I cannot afford their products. I cannot justify spending $80 on a planner.

But points are different story. So I splashed out 8,500 QANTAS Frequent Flyer points on the Leather Personal Planner in Fuchsia.

My favourite features include:
  • 6 ring binder
  • 18 month calendar, refills availble
  • 7 customisable tabs
  • 3 sheets of stickers
  • elastic pen loop
  • card slips
  • 'today' note pad
  • a5 notepad
  • zipped compartment
  • button closure
  • genuine leather
And it looks super cute!

Since it arrived in the mail, I have written down EVERYTHING! And I have found it so much easier to stay on top of things. While I don't take the planner everywhere, I have it perpetually open in the same spot on my desk. This way I don't have to worry about opening and closing it it and it's always in the same place if I want to write something down.

The only thing missing was a hole punch but I managed to buy one online for a couple of bucks. I am now set to live an organised life!

Do you use a planner?
Why, why not?
Fill me in!

If you do want to buy the planner, you can from here!

My Bento Box

Hi all!

So recently I looked at what I have been doing for lunch when I'm at uni and realised I was spending a lot of money on food. I bought lunch with my friends, we went out to Melbourne Central for lunch, if I felt like a coffee...I would buy one and so on.

There was also the issue of time. In the morning I'm struggling to get up , have a shower and get dressed and out the door without worrying if there's something for me to eat at lunch time. Plus I did my time, I ate sandwiches for my 13 years of schooling so if I end up with a sandwich in my handbag there is a 100% chance that I am not going to eat it.

So there's the problem, what's my solution? A Tumblr teacher blogger came to my rescue . While scrolling mindlessly, I saw a post about a bento box and how this teacher was using this. Consider my mind blown.

The physical box is a sectioned lunchbox that can be seen in many different shapes and sizes and in the end, I ended up buying the Bentgo.

And it has changed my lunchtime for good.

I use the top sections  for my snack type foods like pretzels, popcorn, cut vegetables, fruit and crackers . The bottom usually holds my 'main meal', so maybe tuna and rice,  noodles ad stir fry or rice paper rolls. The colour of the box, a lovely purple, really stands out in my bag….plus it's pretty.

One of my favourite parts of this box is the built in cutlery. I will never leave my fork/knife/spoon at home again. The food areas are microwavable for up to three minutes and another plus is that the box is dishwasher safe. No more hand-washing!

I had to buy the box online, since the box has only been available since March this year and only available in the US. I bought mine from LunchBoxes.com since most other online stores were out of stock of the purple.

It did take awhile to come, close to 5 weeks, which has been the only problem I have had with my experience with the box so far.

If you are interested, here are some links for purchasing the box:

Leave me a nice note!

My Colour Coding System

Guess who's back? Back again.

I was reading back over some of my posts regarding my notes and university and realised I haven't explained my colour coding system, which is basically the cornerstone of my sanity.

This system is the best. I would be completely lost without it. It makes study, filing and locating information and paperwork so much easier and faster.

So this is how it works.

I have four units a semester. Each has a unit code. For example, this semester I have:

  1. EDFD 136
  1. EDFD 227
  2. EDAR 366
  3. EDLA 167

My system assigns one of four colours (pink, yellow, green or blue) for each unit, so they would look like this:

  1. EDFD 136
  2. EDFD 227
  3. EDAR 366
  1. EDLA 167

So I have unit outlines, assignments, notes and handout from each unit, which all get filed under the relevant coloured tab in my semester folder. I take my lecture and tutorial notes on pastel coloured notebooks which are same colour as the unit. My assignment cover sheets have a corresponding coloured dot in the corner. I use only the unit colour when highlighting anything. Even my reminder sticky notes are in the unit's colour!

In short, one colour = one unit. The final colour coded product of a semester' work looks like...

I often find myself asking people, 'Do we have blue next?' when talking about our next tutorial/lecture!

I also managed to implement this system with my OneNote notebooks, which is the way to go with taking notes (I think so).

I swear by this. I started using a simplified system in high school but I have definitely kicked it up a notch since starting university. With a little time to set it up and get use it, it really helps to organise things and keep things moving smoothly.

In short, one colour = one unit. The final colour coded product of a semester' work looks like...

(available in assorted colours)

Do you have your own organisational system for notes, handouts etc.?

Drop a line via any of the LMST sites, I would love to hear from you all!

Student Business Cards

Hi everyone!

As I revealed on the LMST Tumblr, last week I ordered some business cards prior to the TeachMeet PD. This is final product:

I ordered them from Vistaprint, who had an offer for 250 Free cards (you just pay delivery) which you can find here. I chose the cheapest option, 21 day delivery for something like $7, but they came last Wednesday, only 10 days after I ordered them.

I'm really happy with how they look and feel, they look extremely professional for the amount of time and effort I had to put in to the thought and design. I was a little apprehensive at first, I didn't really see the need for a business card but I did do my research. There were plenty of articles!

Many were general, aimed at recent grad students or did not specify a study area. Others were more focused on education, substitute teachers or grade teachers. And some were warnings on why students should not have such a thing. They were all worth the read and I considered every view point.

But as you know, I ended up with this set of business cards!

In the future, I would like to add/change some of the details on here. I would like to include my babysitting and tutoring contacts, as well as my grad year and placement info but it seems to soon to for all that right now.

I have another professional learning workshop coming up in September, hosted by one of my tutors Katherine Bussey and the Glen Eira council. I will definitely be bringing these cards and trying to network as much as possible to build some solid professional connections. Again, If you live in the Melbourne, be sure to check it out!

Until next time,

Resource Find - 501 Activity Book

Growing up, our house was filled with books. Living in family of avid readers meant that a love of reading was instilled in me from a young age. It also meant that you could find a variety of books in our house; many of these being ‘activity books’ saved mainly for rainy days and school holidays.

From the selection above, courtesy of my crowded bookshelf and hoarding ways, you can see that these books have a variety of themes ranging from party planning to gender. But reading through these books now, I realised that most of them are aimed at parents or children as an antidote to boredom. I couldn't really find any book within my collection which had an overt appreciation for learning through the play and exploration.
It was when I stopped at my local bookstore that I found the book of my dreams...

501 TV Free Activities for Kids by Diana Hodges

This is an activity binder filled with different ideas and plans on how to entertain and delight children of various ages.

One of the biggest things that sold me on this book was its setup. It has tabs for the types of activity including areas such as outdoor, indoor, science, maths, and words as well as others. The tabs make appropriate activities easy to find under what subject area you want it to focus on or what the children under your care are interested in. It's like having eight books in one! Since the book is spiral bound on a large coil, it is easy to lay flat and look at and this setup prevents damage to the spine and pages of the book as a results of handling and use.

The actual activities in the book use everyday household items which are not difficult to get your hands on and when applicable, lists substitutes which can be used. Depending on the activity, notes are also given on how to can be progressed or simplified depending on the children's abilities and/or the materials available.

With these features plus easily identifiable symbols used throughout the book as a visual representation of key elements used in the activities, this book can be of value for both parents and educators. It was an absolute lifesaver for my last Early Childhood Curriculum and Pedagogy unit when looking at planning for individual children plus I plan on using it as my bible for placement!

On sale at my local bookstore, it only cost me $13.00 (RRP 24.99) but it is available online at Booktopia. For those outside Australia, Amazon does stock new copies at varying prices. The book is even available off iTunes!

With so many sources for activity inspiration, especially those to be found online, this book spoke to me as a physical collection of ideas I can take around with me. Whether I use it when babysitting, on placement, during an assignment or even in the workplace, this was definitely worth the buy.

Do you have a favourite source for activity inspiration?

Placement Preparations - The Reflective Journal

As one of my many placement requirements, I am required to keep a reflective journal documenting my experiences during this period. By the end of this, I should have 10 complete entries.

Featured below is the paragraph from our placement handbook, a sort of checklist for what each entry should contain.

However, this journal will not be my first experience with reflective writing. Last semester I had to complete a reflective journal for a single unit. This was not my favourite activity and since I had little experience with this form of writing, I didn't end up putting much effort into this task. My entries were very brief and ended up sounding rushed, incomplete and didn't dig very deep into my learning. I want things to go differently this time, I don't want any of these entries to be like my previous...

So in comes my placement journal. Very similar to my previous journal, I purchased a white faux moleskin leather journal from Colette Accessories for a mere $3.00 (RRP $9.95, available here).

For such a price, these journals have the look of luxury and an unmatched functionality. While each journal has 120 feint lined pages in a light sepia tone, a ribbon bookmark and an inbuilt, reinforced pocket located at the back of the book, I also customise these journals for increased organisation; I add tabs and number the pages.

The tabs allow me to split my entries into 5 sections, one for each round of placements I will undertake. By adding the numbered pages, I can easily note pages for later reading while also making the pages easy to refer back to in further entries or for referencing in writing.

The last piece of the puzzle is the template. The admin have left it up to the students to decide whether they want to use a template or note and to even design their own template. This leaves me with some questions.

'Should I use a template or just write?'
'What template would work best for this?'
'Should I design my own template or use a pre-existing one?'

I still have some time to think about this but in the meantime, how do you think I should approach this journal?

Please feel free to leave a comment, ask a question or just press follow this blog!
