My Unit Outline

So it's that time again, my semester is starting up and there is such an influx of paperwork, forms and handbooks for each and every unit that it's getting hard to keep my head about the paper pile.

One document that's towards the top of this pile is the unit outline. This document is 30+ pages of information solely on the unit you are taking and what the unit will entail; from study schedules to set readings. My university's policy is that every lecturer  must compile this document for their unit and include the following sections:

  • Policies
  • Resources
  • Student support
  • Attendance
  • Unit description
  • Learning outcomes
  • Graduate attributes
  • Student feedback
  • Referencing
  • Texts and resources

One of the most important sections included in the  unit outline is the assessment section. This section details our assignments for the semester, whether we have exams and what is expected of us for each assessment. This section also has detailed rubrics, grade weightings for each assignment, due dates and what attributes and outcomes are being assessed.

This section of the document is literally the student's bible.  I have never done an assignment  without looking at this part of the outline. When discussing the task in class, I have the relevant  page open. If I ever have questions, I straight away turn to this section, and am happy to tell other classmates to do the same.

I also love that I have this information from the beginning of the semester. It means that from day 1, everybody is on the same page, everybody has the same level of access to information and what you do with this information is up to you.

With the frequency that I was using this document in semester 1 and considering that I was taking it to and from university, having the printed pages stapled together was just not working for me. It was hard to keep it open at a specific page, it was hard to keep the pages in order and it was incredibly difficult to keep the pages neat and prevent them becoming creased.

So, in an effort to combat these problems I was having, I took my unit outlines and a self-made title and tabs pages down to my local Officeworks.

Easily one of the best decisions I made all semester.

This solution fixed every problem I had had in the past. The binding kept it neat and together in the right order plus the nature of the binding allowed me to keep it open at any page without any fuss. Added bonus that the coloured tabs made it easy to separate each unit outline.

To date, I haven't seen anyone else in my course set up their unit outlines this way but I am curious to see how other people set up and use such an important document.

Did you have a document similar to my unit outline?

Did you have any problems with your document?

What was your solution?

Student Business Cards

Hi everyone!

As I revealed on the LMST Tumblr, last week I ordered some business cards prior to the TeachMeet PD. This is final product:

I ordered them from Vistaprint, who had an offer for 250 Free cards (you just pay delivery) which you can find here. I chose the cheapest option, 21 day delivery for something like $7, but they came last Wednesday, only 10 days after I ordered them.

I'm really happy with how they look and feel, they look extremely professional for the amount of time and effort I had to put in to the thought and design. I was a little apprehensive at first, I didn't really see the need for a business card but I did do my research. There were plenty of articles!

Many were general, aimed at recent grad students or did not specify a study area. Others were more focused on education, substitute teachers or grade teachers. And some were warnings on why students should not have such a thing. They were all worth the read and I considered every view point.

But as you know, I ended up with this set of business cards!

In the future, I would like to add/change some of the details on here. I would like to include my babysitting and tutoring contacts, as well as my grad year and placement info but it seems to soon to for all that right now.

I have another professional learning workshop coming up in September, hosted by one of my tutors Katherine Bussey and the Glen Eira council. I will definitely be bringing these cards and trying to network as much as possible to build some solid professional connections. Again, If you live in the Melbourne, be sure to check it out!

Until next time,

Resource Find - 501 Activity Book

Growing up, our house was filled with books. Living in family of avid readers meant that a love of reading was instilled in me from a young age. It also meant that you could find a variety of books in our house; many of these being ‘activity books’ saved mainly for rainy days and school holidays.

From the selection above, courtesy of my crowded bookshelf and hoarding ways, you can see that these books have a variety of themes ranging from party planning to gender. But reading through these books now, I realised that most of them are aimed at parents or children as an antidote to boredom. I couldn't really find any book within my collection which had an overt appreciation for learning through the play and exploration.
It was when I stopped at my local bookstore that I found the book of my dreams...

501 TV Free Activities for Kids by Diana Hodges

This is an activity binder filled with different ideas and plans on how to entertain and delight children of various ages.

One of the biggest things that sold me on this book was its setup. It has tabs for the types of activity including areas such as outdoor, indoor, science, maths, and words as well as others. The tabs make appropriate activities easy to find under what subject area you want it to focus on or what the children under your care are interested in. It's like having eight books in one! Since the book is spiral bound on a large coil, it is easy to lay flat and look at and this setup prevents damage to the spine and pages of the book as a results of handling and use.

The actual activities in the book use everyday household items which are not difficult to get your hands on and when applicable, lists substitutes which can be used. Depending on the activity, notes are also given on how to can be progressed or simplified depending on the children's abilities and/or the materials available.

With these features plus easily identifiable symbols used throughout the book as a visual representation of key elements used in the activities, this book can be of value for both parents and educators. It was an absolute lifesaver for my last Early Childhood Curriculum and Pedagogy unit when looking at planning for individual children plus I plan on using it as my bible for placement!

On sale at my local bookstore, it only cost me $13.00 (RRP 24.99) but it is available online at Booktopia. For those outside Australia, Amazon does stock new copies at varying prices. The book is even available off iTunes!

With so many sources for activity inspiration, especially those to be found online, this book spoke to me as a physical collection of ideas I can take around with me. Whether I use it when babysitting, on placement, during an assignment or even in the workplace, this was definitely worth the buy.

Do you have a favourite source for activity inspiration?

My First PD!

Hi all!
I am so excited, as on Thursday I will be attending my first PD!
Known as TeachMeet, it consists of 2 or 7 minute presentations given by the teachers which attend. It’s being held at my uni so it will be super easy to get to.
Check out the video for how TeachMeet works and how teachers get involved in these innovative professional development sessions.

If you find yourself in or around the Melbourne CBD on Thursday, you should definitely check it out! Comment below or tweet me and I will be happy to pass on the details!

Keep checking back here as I will be blogging about this wonderful experience after Thursday. I cannot tell you all how excited I am to be going!
